Sowjetunion im Jahr 1937. Tausende Briefe von Gefangenen, die während des stalinistischen Regimes fälschlicherweise beschuldigt wurden, liegen verbrannt in einer Gefängniszelle. Despite everything, one of them reaches its destination, the desk of the newly appointed local prosecutor Alexander Kornev. Kornev does what he can to meet the prisoner, a victim of NKVD secret police agents. A young prosecutor, a devoted and unscrupulous Bolshevik, suspects that something is wrong. The search for justice leads him to the office of the Prosecutor General in Moscow. At the time of the great Stalinist purges, it is the immersion of a person in a totalitarian regime.
