In honor of the 100th anniversary of the Bethlehem Church, we are organizing 3 concerts in December! The first in this series is a concert by Jesse van Ruller and Maarten Hogenhuis. Guitarist Jesse van Ruller and saxophonist Maarten Hogenhuis form a powerful and versatile jazz duo that seamlessly brings tradition and innovation together. Both are prominent figures within the Dutch jazz scene: van Ruller has an international reputation as one of the most talented guitarists of his generation, with collaborations with greats such as Roy Hargrove and Joe Lovano. His playing is characterized by a rich melodic sensitivity and rhythmic agility. Hogenhuis, known for the formation BRUUT! and his own trio, combines technical mastery with a fresh, contemporary vision of jazz, which earned him the North Sea Jazz Composition Assignment in 2019 .
Their collaboration, rooted in the jazz tradition, transcends genre boundaries and draws inspiration from modern artists such as Sufjan Stevens and Blake Mills. With their new album, Follow the Sound, they offer a wide palette of sounds, ranging from acoustic melodies to experimental soundscapes. In their live performances they constantly seek dialogue and break traditional roles of soloist and accompanist, making each performance feel unique and rich in both spontaneity and technical finesse .
This duo promises an evening full of melody and improvisation in which jazz is given a modern twist and the audience is taken on a musical journey through unexpected sounds and rhythms.
