About event

Sci-fi opera by Philip Glass (composition) and David Henry Hwang (lyrics)

How does it feel to be abducted by aliens, then return to Earth and continue your life as if nothing had ever happened? Philip Glass and David Henry Hwang explore this question in their 1988 science fiction chamber opera 1000 Airplanes on the Roof.

Director Paige Eakin Young brings the minimal music legend's work, composed in 1988, into the present. Eakin Young draws on her experiences as a trans woman and lets the main character M. - played by the singer and performer Mara Snip - regain control of her own story. In dealing with the experience she has had, M. tries to understand the event, her feelings and the impact on her future. And in an act of self-empowerment, she tries to find something positive about the incident and celebrate the experience of being different and transformation. At the same time, it playfully invites the audience to change themselves and their ways of seeing, listening and experiencing. And it calls on us all to become aware that our perception is also a tool for writing stories.

In English, with German surtitles.
