L’INCONNU DE LA GRANDE ARCHE - Stéphane Demoustier, Fr./Dán., 2025, 105 min., fr. ver., Czech. tit.
Year 1983. An architectural competition is announced for a new landmark of Paris, which is to become a symbol of the modern La Défense district. The largest international architectural firms will participate in the competition, and surprisingly the unknown architecture teacher Johan Otto von Spreckelsen (Claes Bang) wins with his project The Great Arch - La Grande Arche. Until now, this 50-year-old Dane has built only four buildings: his home and three small chapels, devoting his life primarily to teaching and finding the balance between space, light and the human soul. Its Great Arch is simple, geometrically pure, inspired by the idea of a gateway to heaven. The film "The Architect" follows how Otto deals with pressure from politicians, officials and the media, and with his own doubts as to whether it is possible to remain true to his spiritual vision in the midst of a world of compromises. The building, which was supposed to be a symbol of harmony, gradually turns into a mirror of his inner struggle.
