About event
We meet in Berlin on December 17 to commemorate the arrest of writer and political activist Ali Al-Shihabi, who has been missing since 2012 without his family and loved ones having received any news clarifying his fate to this day. Through this meeting, we seek to open a small space in which to recall Al-Shehabi’s experience, with its presence that is still tangible despite his absence. It is also an invitation to re-read the experiences of political detainees in Syria, and the ideas and writings they left behind that are still able to contribute to building a more just and free future.
Ali Al-Shehabi lived in the Yarmouk camp in Damascus, and worked for a long time as an English language teacher, before establishing the camp in the camp. An educational institute called “Khayyam Institute”. This environment in the Yarmouk camp was part of Ali Al-Shihabi’s intellectual and humanitarian formation. Since his youth, Ali has been a well-known face among the youth generation, who was active in organizing independent political activities inside the camp, and participated in writing statements and organizing demonstrations outside the traditional Palestinian factional frameworks. After his release from his second detention in the 1980s, his focus focused on writing, especially on topics of the relationship between authority and society, the impact of political unrest on people’s lives, and the possibilities for change within a complex and volatile reality.
In the 1990s, he published the book “The New Structure of the World,” then the book “Syria, Where to?” In the mid-2000s. In the early 2000s, he was working to establish the “Syria for All” movement, whose basic idea is based on fighting sectarianism and promoting national belonging. The Assad regime arrested him for the third time because of this activity. With the beginnings of the Syrian revolution in 2011, Ali Al-Shihabi remained close to the civil initiatives inside the Yarmouk camp, trying to maintain a space for dialogue within the camp and throughout Syria.
During this meeting, we will review selections from Ali Al-Shihabi’s writings, and testimonies from people who knew him and worked with him. Over the course of two hours, we will try to approach the experience he left behind, the way he understood his role in his society, and the questions that continued to accompany him until the moment of his arrest.
A group of Ali Al-Shehabi’s companions participate in the dialogue:
- Faiq Hawija - Lawyer
- Rateb Shabo - Writer (online)
- Riyad Odeh - Engineer
The dialogue is moderated by researcher Lina Omran, and he is followed by Solo playing the oud instrument by Sham Al-Salloum.
