About event

Germany was divided for 40 years, and a wall separated Berlin into two parts for almost 30 years. Günter Polauke was a GDR border guard and later district mayor of Treptow, which bordered the West Berlin district of Neukölln.
80 years after the liberation of Germany from Nazi rule and a good 35 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, he wanted to explore what the former German-German border looks like today.
Shortly before the start of his hike, on May 8th, 2025, he spoke about it in the Theater Ost.
Günter Polauke was on foot for over two months - on the column path along the former inner-German border. It was over 1,400 kilometers, countless encounters and many moving conversations with people in villages, cities and on the hiking trail.
What moved him along the way - in his head and in his heart? What did he experience, hear, and see?
Now Günter Polauke is back at the Theater Ost and draws a first, very personal conclusion about his peace hike.

Holger Friedrich, publisher of the Berliner Zeitung and the Weltbühne, who accompanied Günter for part of the insightful journey, will moderate the evening and also report on the adventure himself.

An evening about memories, encounters and moving on.
