On a visit to her uncle in Zemianske Podhradí, Adela, the only daughter of a Zeman from Ostrá Lúka, meets an extraordinary man. Philosopher and poet Ludevít Štúr is dissatisfied with social conditions in 19th century Hungary, rebels against discriminatory regulations and, by inciting civil disobedience, balances on the edge of the law. Against common sense, Adela falls passionately in love with him. She believes that if she gets a proud and sarcastic man close to her, he will begin to return her love. He provides him with a temporary home in his mansion, pays for private philosophy lessons, and uses his father's influence to get Štúr elected to the lower house of the Hungarian Parliament. At the moment when it seems that Adele's plan is starting to succeed, a revolution breaks out and Ludevít is swept away by a whirlwind that will transform Europe forever.
