About event

Gentle '89... the revolution that started in the theater
/commented tour of the exhibition/
17. November at 9:00 a.m. in Studio 12

The exhibition Nežná '89... the revolution that started in the theater was created on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the democratic change in our society, whose direct actors were theater men and women. Actors, actresses, directors and playwrights accepted the call of striking students, joined the political process and became one of the important groups that influenced the course of the largest political and social event in the former Czechoslovakia in the second half of the 20th century. Their stage experience helped them to understand the slogans and ideas of the time at demonstrations or discussions, their general popularity added weight to their words. In the first days, actors and actresses replaced the silent media and knew how to forcefully, clearly and emotionally formulate the demands of the demonstrators.

The exhibition Nežná '89... the revolution that began in the theater reflects the breakthrough days and weeks that led to the end of the communist dictatorship and the establishment of democracy in Czechoslovakia. The exhibition includes period materials and photographs from archives and theaters. The exhibition maps not only the atmosphere in the squares, but also the most important productions of that time, which in many ways foreshadowed the course of the November revolutionary days.

Lesson of the Gentle Revolution
/lecture/
17. November at 10:00 in Studio 12

The lecture will focus on the situation in normalized Czechoslovakia in the period just before the fall of the communist regime - on topics such as human rights, dissent and independent culture, ecology, samizdat versus collaboration, occupation, or official culture and mass media as the starting point of the Gentle Revolution in November 1989.
We will also look at the specific course of the Gentle Revolution revolution in Slovakia, with an emphasis on the emergence of Public against Violence, the Student Movement and other opposition initiatives, on the reactions of the (still) ruling communist regime, and finally on the symbolic legacy of the Gentle Revolution for today's society.

The lecture will be led by: PhDr. Radoslav Ragač, PhD., director of the Center for Research on the Period of Unfreedom.

Entrance to the event is free. Registration is required at:
