Exhibitions of two important photographers of their time - Rudolf Koppitz and Martin Parr - are presented in the premises of the House of Art. The exhibitions PHOTOGENIE – Rudolf Koppitz and KRONIKÁR/THE CHRONICLER – Martina Parr are part of the 34th edition of the Month of Photography festival organized by the Central European House of Photography. Rudolf Koppitz
PHOTOGENIE

Opening: Tuesday 5 November 2024 at 18.30
Curators: Johannes Faber and Lois Lammerhuber

Rudolf Koppitz (1884 – 1936, AU) is considered not only one of the most important Austrian photographers of the interwar period, but also as one of the leading personalities of artistic photography in the German-speaking world. His work spans several decades and is characterized by a remarkable variety of styles and techniques. Koppitz experimented with various photographic techniques and created a special visual language influenced by the aesthetics of pictorialism. He also devoted himself to photographing nudes, which in precise compositions capture women in dynamic poses and convey strength and beauty. In the later period, he increasingly adopted constructivism and new objectivity. He was constantly looking for new technical and artistic challenges, which he approached with great passion and enthusiasm. He influenced other generations of photographers.

The exhibition was created in cooperation with the Johannes Faber Gallery in Vienna.

Martin Parr
KRONIKÁR/THE CHRONICLER

Opening: Tuesday 5 November 2024 at 19.00
Curator: Lois Lammerhuber< br/>
Martin Parr (1952, UK) is a chronicler of our time. Faced with an ever-increasing flood of images published in the media, his photographs offer us the opportunity to see the world from a unique perspective. The motifs he chooses are strange, the colors are gaudy and the angles unusual. Parr refers to the enormous power of published photographs as "propaganda". He fights against this propaganda with his own chosen weapons - criticism, seduction and humor. Thanks to this, his photos are original and fun, accessible and understandable. Parr shows us in a penetrating way how we live, how we present ourselves to others and what we value. Traveling around the world, he examines national characteristics and international phenomena to see how valid they are as symbols to help future generations understand our cultural peculiarities.
