About event
The preservation of the longest -preserved section of the Berlin Wall and the famous wall images are the focus of the conversation. Appropriate approaches have been wrestled, argued and fought in recent years. Many works of art have been renewed, meanwhile the historical substance disappears and the conflict between art and monument values, tourist use and maintenance is becoming increasingly obvious. Only an extensive renovation in 2008/2009 was able to save the East Side Gallery from disappearing. However, the remnants of the works of art had to be completely removed and the concrete had to be set out comprehensively. Afterwards, most artists created their wall pictures a second time. The East Side Gallery was literally set at the beginning - sometimes with significant changes compared to the original. To date, the monument, with more than four million visits to one of the most visited places in Berlin, has been painted, restored and partially renovated. Public space can be preserved appropriately in the long term or is it always transparent?
How can - also current - artistic appropriation processes and monument preservation be brought into harmony with one another?
What is the original of the monument - the remaining substance or the newly created images?
