As part of our series of discussions “35 Years of Reunification”, the Rotary Club Berlin Platz der Republik is visiting a place with very special symbolic power today: the State Council building on Schlossplatz. 🏛️🇩🇪
This striking building was once the official residence of the State Council of the GDR - a political power center in the heart of East Berlin. The copy of the baroque Portal IV, the original of which comes from the old Berlin City Palace, is particularly impressive. It was precisely here, in this historic location, that Karl Liebknecht proclaimed the “Free Socialist Republic” in 1918 - a moment that made German history.
After reunification, the building even served as the seat of the Federal Chancellor for a short time before finding a new role in 2006: Today it is the headquarters of the renowned ESMT Berlin, an international business school that promotes innovation, change and global perspectives stands. 🌍📚
The visit connects the past and the present - and offers space for dialogue about democracy, transformation and responsibility.
Especially in times of social challenges, it is important to visit such places of change, reflect and think about the future together. 🤝✨
After the tour, we took the U5 under the Brandenburg Gate through "over" to the Zollpackhof, then we started the evening in the east in thematic style and ended it in the west 🤩🫶
