About event

November 9, 1989 - Celebrate 34 years of the fall of the wall! - Bring champagne!

" ... that the Wall and the internal German barriers did not simply "fall" - as is often said in a simplistic way today - and the SED leadership did not open them voluntarily, but only due to the constantly growing pressure in the course of this non-violent revolution, triggered by people wanting to leave the country and civil rights activists, most recently side by side with prominent GDR artists and an increasingly dissatisfied and impatient, no longer passive middle class. Until the night of November 9th.
And so, from my point of view, it seems deeply disingenuous when Egon Krenz claims the opening of the border as his own and says that he acted to avert dangers from the GDR and the democracy movement.
Ultimately, Schabowski's press conference was intended to stifle the revolution. This happened clumsily and in any case too late, since the storming of the Berlin Wall by the impatient was in the logic of events, even if it had only happened days or weeks later. Because, in my view, the political bureaucracy was not interested in bringing down the wall. She wanted to preserve it and combine it with travel regulations.
What was crucial was that since the beginning of September 1989, more and more East Germans had experienced that they could achieve reforms and bring the dictatorship to its knees through peaceful demonstrations on the streets - and that they were able to overcome their fear. Compared to the courage of the self-confident demonstrators, the leadership of the SED was powerless with all its means of power, including the secret police State Security.
Stifling the revolution by opening the border in a controlled manner turned out to be a miscalculation ... " (Rainer Eckert)
