The 1st Gala Concert December 1st (also called the Concert of Portugal, Restoration and National Independence) resulted from the initiative of the December 1st Movement, today organized by the Historical Society of the Independence of Portugal. It is part of the National Celebrations of the 1st of December, in Lisbon, of which it constitutes the first act. It was an original idea by José Ribeiro e Castro, then founder and general coordinator of the 1st of December Movement, launched in 2012, to defend the national holiday of the 1st of December and improve the celebrations of this national date.

In 2013, the first experience of this Concert was held, then in the main hall of the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, on Rua das Portas de Santo Antão, and with a chamber orchestra: the Camerata Amicis, directed by the Maestro Carlos Silva.

Subsequently, it was decided to change to a large stage performance, entrusting the interpretation of the concert to the Banda da Armada, whose Maestro is the Captain-of-Fragate Musician Délio Gonçalves. In 2015, it was held in the Grand Auditorium of the Centro Cultural de Belém and, in 2016, at Teatro da Trindade, followed by another interruption due to lack of room and, in 2020, because of the pandemic. The concert returned in 2021, now, to the Cineteatro Itália room, where it would return in 2022 and 2023. In the 2015 and 2022 editions, the concert was conducted, respectively, by 1st Lieutenant Musician José Veloso and 2nd Lieutenant Musician Samuel Pascoal.< br/>
The Concert consists solely of the interpretation of pieces by Portuguese composers, paying homage to the spirit, freedom and independence of Portugal, in the circumstance of evoking the Restoration of 1640.
< br/> The desire and dream of the 1st of December Movement (and, today, of the Historical Society of the Independence of Portugal) was to progressively create, through the Concert of Portugal, Restoration and National Independence, on the 1st of December, a tradition that, over the years, will become as strong and as charismatic as the famous New Year's Concert, premiered in 1939 and played every January 1st by the Vienna Philharmonic, at the Musikverein in the Austrian capital. For this objective, it is essential to always perform by the same orchestra (the Banda da Armada), on the same day and in the same concert hall (conditions not yet met). And the same costume is followed, corresponding to a short concert, lasting one hour without intermission, in the late afternoon, and always ending in the same way, with a festive and solemn character. The finale seeks to involve the public in crescendo: Marcha dos Marinheiros, Anthem of the Restoration (instrumental and then sung by the public) and National Anthem.

In 2024, the concert will become the Gala Concert of December 1st, premiering at the São Luiz Teatro Municipal, at night, in the normal two-part format with an intermission. It is expected that it will stabilize here, always on November 29th from 2025 and, thus, enter the annual musical program of Portuguese music lovers.

The concert has, since 2021, been supported by EGEAC and Lisbon City Council.
