On Saturday, December 20, we will commemorate the 81st anniversary of the bombing of Prešov, one of the most tragic events in its history. On the night of December 20, 1944, planes of the Red Army hit Prešov.
The targets were German military units and strategic objects in the city - ammunition warehouses, military supplies, or the Gestapo building and prison on Konštantínová Street.
However, the bombing also affected the civilian part of the city. 85 houses were completely destroyed, 250 were seriously damaged and another 347 suffered minor damage. A total of 1,700 out of 2,050 houses were damaged.
The number of victims is still not known exactly. Officially, 140 people were buried in Prešov. 120 prisoners from the entire territory of Šarišsko-Zemplín County died during the bombing of the prison on Konštantínová Street. Total war damages were calculated at approximately 560 million crowns.
The commemorative meeting on the occasion of the 81st anniversary of the bombing of the city of Prešov will take place on December 20, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at the Memorial to the Victims of Fascism on Konštantínová Street.
