Come to the Try Out of the new performance of Cello Octet on 3 April in collaboration with Nyokabi Kariuki: Birdsongs from Kĩrĩnyaga.

Birdsongs from Kĩrĩnyaga East African honey suckers have been singing the same song for a million years. You can find the birds at Mount Kenya, the birthplace of Nyokabi's father. Has this bird song influenced the music of the people who lived in the areas at the time? Nyokabi thinks about the way in which her African ancestors have stored knowledge orally - in singing and music, in language and in telling stories - before a colonial system disrupted this living way of communicating.

For Nyokabi, the lasting nature of this bird song has deeply consequences for the way we understand ideas about "origin". In this try-out, nyokabi kariũki together with Cello Octet Amsterdam A musical exploration of nature and heritage. With voice, cellos and field recordings, she investigates the power of oral music traditions and the resilience of both birds and people.
