A-Trane Presents Day 2
Today With:
Lina Allemano Four
«The Diptychs»
FEAT: Brodie West-Andrew Downing-Nick Fraser

German
The Canadian trumpeter Lina Allemano commutes between Toronto and Berlin and works primarily with European musicians. At the Jazzfest Berlin she presents her longest-running band: with three other heavyweights from Toronto, she brings her post-bop compositions to the stage with style and swing.

English
Canadian trumpeter Lina Allemano splits her time between Toronto and Berlin, usually working with a wide variety of European musicians. But this year she presents her longest-running band, a quartet of Toronto heavies that dissects her post-bop tunes with style and swing.

German
The trumpeter Lina Allemano is originally from Toronto, but has spent a large part of her time in Berlin in recent years. While she commuted back and forth between the metropolises, she founded bands in both cities. She already performed with the eccentric Berlin trio Ohrschmaus with Michael Griener and Dan Peter Sundland at the Jazzfest Berlin in 2020, but at this year's edition of the festival she is finally presenting her longest-running group live. Lina Allemano Four is joined by Canadian colleagues Nick Fraser on drums, Brodie West on saxophone and Andrew Downing on bass. The quartet undertakes open-ended excursions into the realms of deeply relaxed freebop, permeated by casually expanded techniques. On the ninth album “The Diptychs”, which was released just in time for the start of the festival, the band sounds more well-rehearsed and bold than ever before.
Allemano's melodic pieces enable the individual band members to have exciting conversations in duo, trio or quartet format. The bandleader builds each of her pieces on a series of different passages and creates her compositions from changing encounters and constant exchange - a fascinating network of multilinear possibilities. Occasionally the rhythm section provides a fast-paced groove for the front line, but just as often one of the wind instruments dances with the bass or gets caught up in a drum roll. So the perspective of music is constantly changing. The quartet cleverly internalizes Allemano's motifs and instinctively transforms the notated material in the most astonishing ways. The familiarity of their melodies is absorbed by the group, but their expected resolutions are also regularly questioned. Her sound is one surprise after another.

Toronto trumpeter Lina Allemano has spent a good chunk of her time in Berlin over the years, commuting between cities and forming bands in both locales. Her eccentric Berlin trio with Michael Griener and Dan Peter Sundland, Ohrschmaus, appeared at Jazzfest Berlin in 2020, but she is finally presenting her longest-running group this year. The Lina Allemano Four features a superb group of fellow Canadians – drummer Nick Fraser, saxophonist Brodie West and bassist Andrew Downing – taking open-ended excursions into wonderfully loosey-goosey freebop awash in nonchalant extended techniques. As heard on the band’s ninth album “The Diptychs”, whose release coincides with their Jazzfest Berlin performance, they have never sounded more assured or bold.
Allemano’s tuneful vehicles facilitate thrilling conversations – duets, trios and full-band interactions. She constructs each piece from an array of disparate passages, building compositions from shifting encounters and exchanges, a kind of round robin array of multilinear wonder. Sometimes the rhythm section provides a hurtling groove for the frontline, but just as often one of the horns tangos with bass or gets tangled up within a splatter of percussion, forever altering the music’s perspective. The quartet adroitly internalizes her themes, as instincts transform written material with endless astonishments, taking the warm familiarity of her melodies and regularly challenging expected resolutions. This is the sound of surprise.
