ABC DA WAR
Reading and Thought around the Theater Texts on the War
João Sousa Cardoso
28 January, 4 March, April 15, May 6, June 24, 24h, 18h
Sala Mário Viegas
PRECORY TO ANNOUNCING
ABC DA and the analysis of works of modern and contemporary dramaturgy related to the issue of war. The cycle includes national and foreign authors and runs between January and November 2025, with monthly regularity, in the Mário Viegas Sala of the São Luiz Theater. The theme is not chronological or illustratively treated, and can punctually be approached by its inside out or by tangential lines where the condition of war acts as a backdrop (as in the rifles of the lady carrar, by Bertolt Brecht, with which the program is closed) or where the social conflict is economic or cultural. In each session, the analysis of the text in the globality (aesthetic, sociological, political) and in particular aspects (formal, side comments of the authors, intertextuality) is up to João Sousa Cardoso, university and essayist professor, who has developed theoretical production in the field of the transversality of thought and the cross -disciplines. In each session, moments of reading the text of excerpts from the play fit the interpretation of an actress/actor, in narrow dialogue with critical reflection. The project is proposed to create a reading circle that promotes, in a collective experience, the analytical and critical study of texts in the history of the theater of the last one hundred years, dedicated to an audience that is intended for professionals and amateurs, theorists and artists, adding different formations and age groups. The auditorium device and low light build a performance conference environment in a proximity relationship with the audience. To give unity to these meetings, the visual artist Ana Pérez-Quiroga created a summary scenographic environment that incites the mental images of the war. The project will culminate in a publication with the ten critical texts and a comparative reading of the set of the dramaturgical texts studied, in addition to the images of the sessions, to be edited in 2026.
