About event
💛 We cordially invite you to the lecture by Pavel Keřkovský, Dr. on the topic of the Absurdity of the Death Penalty organized by the Prague Amnesty.
For millennia, the death penalty was considered a legitimate way of punishment for a whole range of crimes, even for other than permitted thinking: in the Middle Ages for heresy, under the communist regime for its criticism (248 political prisoners were hanged, a long and agonizing death). Already in ancient times, some thinkers rejected the death penalty. In the 20th and 21st centuries, its absurdity and its real or perceived deterrent effect are debated. That is why it was abolished in some states. Somewhere, the executions still did not stop. So we are entering a debate that has been going on for many centuries, and we will look for reasons why the death penalty is an absurd punishment.
Pavel Keřkovský, Dr. (1953), born in Brno. He graduated from the Comenius Evangelical Faculty of Theology (1977-1977). After not receiving state approval to perform clerical service, he joined the II. orthopedic department at the FN Brno u sv. Anna (1977). 1980-2001 pastor of the Evangelical Church of the Czech Brethren in Bukovec (1980-1988) and in Horní Vilémovice (1988-2001). From 2001 until now, assistant professor at the Department of Theological Ethics at the Evangelical Theological Faculty of the Charles University. He is a member of the editorial board of the investigative religious magazine Protestant.
📌 The lecture will take place on Thursday 21.11 from 18:00 at the Scout Institute in Staromák, room Minuta.
As part of the event, it will be possible to sign petitions for the release of several political prisoners and female prisoners sentenced to death.
Everyone is welcome. We look forward to seeing you! 💛
