About event

How do you start a life at the end of the story?
Three girls from the outskirts, Center Shock on their tongues, a Mercedes star torn off around their necks. The six-track eagle frame in front of your nose. East Berlin childhood around 1990.
You are free. At least that is what is claimed. Freer than their mothers, who lose themselves in the chaos of upheaval. Freer than their grandmothers, who are still haunted by the ghosts of the past. The three girls want to take their lives into their own hands. But when they realize that their new freedom also has its limits, there is a bang.

Lenka, Chaline and the narrator grow up next door to each other, on Berlin's main arterial road, the Adlergestell. Best friends, inseparable, despite or because of the completely different backgrounds they come from. When they start school, they enter the chaos after the “end of history”. It tastes as sweet and sparkles as sour as the new Center Shocks. But the great expectations burst as quickly as their bubble gum bubbles. Because the eagles care little about their existence and a frame provides no support. 35 years later, the narrator begins a search for clues. Why did they get lost? What does their past, that of their mothers and grandmothers, have to do with the upheavals of today? And did they even have a chance?
A furious post-reunification novel that leads right into our present.

»Laura Laabs describes a present that is slipping into the future at the beginning of the 90s. And the past also sits at the coffee table and drinks eggnog. A book that confidently walks through time.« Jenny Erpenbeck
