About event
Author's walk by guide Kristýna Maková.
Get to know Mala Strana a little differently than you are used to. In the surroundings of baroque palaces and more modern buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries, there are monuments to the villages and settlements that were located in this location more than 700 years ago. Go to these places with a guide who will add interesting information and comments to them.
Malá Strana is a beautiful part of Prague, admired by Prague residents as well as Czech and foreign tourists. We mostly associate it with monumental baroque palaces and churches. Of course, did you know that in the first half of the 14th century Malá Strana only reached beyond the boundaries of Malostranské náměstí and the then Carthusian Gate? And further on, there were already villages and settlements for which there are monuments that have survived to the present day?
Nebovidy and Újezd were only two of the six settlements on the territory of the present-day Malá Strana, which as such already in they don't exist today. However, we can still find monuments to them, especially if we are perceptive and attentive
The oldest settlements on the current territory of Malá Strana were therefore a total of six. And we will walk through the territories where two of them were located, namely
🍀 Újezd
🍀 and Nebovidy.
The first of the names probably means something to you he says, because part of one of the main streets, main roads and traffic arteries passing through Mala Strana is still named after this village. The second one is more for information connoisseurs and lovers of Prague, but once you find yourself in Nebovidy, you will most likely, like me, be completely captivated and enchanted.
So join me and let's walk together around the places where the monuments of these settlements and villages, which have themselves long since disappeared, are still preserved.
What you will learn and what you will show me?
🌿 Where was the settlement of Újezd and what did the construction of the Hunger Wall mean for it?
🌿 Was the construction of the Hunger Wall really just an act of mercy by the sovereign to support and feed his subjects , i.e. some kind of medieval citizens, even without the current freedoms and rights?
🌿 Where was the Smíchov parish church located, originally on the territory of the Újezd settlement, which was at the end 19th century demolished? And what else reminds him of it today?
🌿 Where was Újezdská and later New Újezdská brána located? And on the site of which park were artillery barracks until 1932?
🌿 Where was the first chain bridge in Prague built, even before the construction of the National Theatre, which monarch was it named after and where could you still visit it in pass through today?
🌿 Where was the parish church, which became a laundry for some time, only for the church to return to it in the 20th century, but this time the Czechoslovak one Hussite?
🌿 How did it happen that there is a statue of St. John by the church of St. John, but it is two different saints?
🌿 Where was Jan Neruda born and what currently resembles the place where his cradle is said to have stood?
🌿 Where was Karel Hynek Mácha born and how high will you have to look to notice the commemorative plaque that commemorates it, and that too with a mistake? And where did the lilacs actually come from, which we also associate with Mácha thanks to his monument on Petřín?
🌿 Where was the medieval hospital and what does this location have in common with the writer, lawyer, university master and humanist Viktorín Kornel from Všehrd?
🌿 Where was the settlement of Nebovidy and what did the construction of the Hunger Wall mean for it?
🌿 Where and where does the street lead, which in its name still reminds of the settlement of Nebovidy?
🌿 Where was the parish church of the village of Nebovidy located and what purpose does it currently serve?
🌿 What does this location have in common with the order Magdalene, the monastery of St. Mary Magdalene and the Czech Museum of Music?
🌿 Which important builders were associated with this location and with Mala Strana in general? And they were finally buried in the Malostranský cemetery, which was not and is not currently located in the territory of Malá Strana?
Come for a walk, learn something and experience something!
I will be happy to show you well-known corners of Malá Strana as well as views of Prague Castle and Petřín and Kampa and Vltava from various angles, as well as corners and alleys that you may not have known before and which have also been shaping the appearance of Malá Strana for several centuries. as we currently know it and actually don't even know it a little, unless we are enthusiasts or locals.
