In earlier times, organ improvisation was an integral part of organ playing, which was often given more emphasis than interpretation. Improvisation was also present at the beginning of music itself and is therefore one of the oldest human artistic expressions. It has become the musical language of all cultures and has held important roles on various occasions. It predates musical notation and has been part of musical expression for centuries. In the Baroque era, the art of improvisation became a sort of measure of a player's musical talent, experience and readiness. With the technical development of musical instruments, the study of the instrument's literature and demands placed on the virtuosity of artists, improvisation fell into a secondary role. However, it has retained its position in various musical currents and continues to be cultivated primarily with the organ.
Improvisation provides the performer with the opportunity to respond to specific inspirational elements and thus offers unique possibilities of variability, responding at a given time to current circumstances and given thematic resources. The organist thus accepts content topics, e.g. in the form of read texts. Musical, which in our case are the themes of Advent songs or hymns. He works with the color options of the instrument, the sound layout of the space and is also inspired by the spiritual atmosphere prevailing in the place where he improvises. It offers much that already composed music cannot offer.
Our leading performer Jaroslav Tůma is a true master of organ improvisation. He is a pedagogue at the AMU in Prague, where he teaches, among other things, improvisation. Come listen to this performer and be inspired by his improvisations, with the possibility to meditate on Advent themes through unique and unrepeatable music that will be created just at that moment, just for you. The first Advent Half Hour takes place on Sunday, December 1 at 5:00 p.m. in the church of St. Antonina. Fr. Pavel Semela will take care of the spiritual word.
The second organ Half Hour will be held on Sunday, December 15, again at 5:00 p.m., and its interpreter will be Miroslav Pšenička. This time the spiritual word will belong to deacon Jiří Beran.
