Come and visit us in the run-up to Christmas and learn more about how wild animals in Africa cope with the dramatic increase in human population and changes in the environment...
< br/>Africa of dreams and reality jumped out at me as the first possible title, the same as the legendary travelogue of Zikmund and Hanselka, published seventy years ago. Our perception of Africa is still influenced by the past: "We are the civilized society that has to help the chaos in the regions in the south, because they can't do it without us..." However, the reality is quite different. Africa is developing, very dynamically. In 2100, 39% of the world's human population will live in Africa, today it is 18%. The African continent is also home to the largest number of large mammals, for which coexistence with humans is already a real challenge.

Did you know that wild mammals make up only 4% of the mammal biomass on Earth? The remaining 62% is represented by farm animals and 34% by humans. Within the 4%, antelopes belong to species that are rarely seen, but form a vital part of ecosystems, the functioning of which is crucial for the future of humanity. Yet we know so little about them. One of the most numerous species of antelope in Africa is the variegated forest antelope, and there are currently about 1,000 individuals per forest. Among the least numerous species, on the other hand, is the Derby antelope, of which there are less than five hundred left. Is it possible for antelopes to cope with the dramatic increase in human population and changes in the environment caused by climate change? Our Antelope Conservation team has been searching for a way for the future of known and unknown antelope species and their coexistence with humans for 25 years. With your support, we can do it. Come and learn more.

Course lecturer: Doc. Ing. Karolína Brandlová, Ph.D.
Doc. Ing. Karolína Brandlová, Ph.D. has more than 20 years of fieldwork experience in the West African savannah, primarily in the field of Derby antelope conservation in Senegal. She is the president of the Antelope Conservation (Derbianus Conservation) association, through which she supports the protection of antelopes in the savannahs of West and Central Africa. He works at the Faculty of Tropical Agriculture of the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague in the Wildlife Ecology Lab research team. She is a member of the IUCN SSC Antelope Specialist Group and EAZA Antelope & Giraffe TAG Conservation Coordinator. He also works as a researcher at the Dvur Králové Safari Park. She is raising three children alone and doing what she can to support women in science.
