About event
☘️ 5th concert of the summer part of the 7th year of the Chamber Music Festival in the Domus & Hortus Artis House and Garden of the Albrecht House 2026
🎵 Although the roots of "close harmony" go back to the 19th century, to African-American barbershop and gospel singing, it was not until the late 20s of the 20th century that all-female ensembles adopted this style and began to use it in popular music. Hailing from New Orleans, the Boswell Sisters (Martha, Connee and Vet) are widely considered to be the pioneers of all-female girl groups singing in "tight harmony". They appeared in 1925 and by 1930 they had become nationally known. They brought with them complex, syncopated jazz harmonies and scat singing that revolutionized vocal arrangements. The concept of narrow vocal harmonies (usually for three to four female voices) began to spread to Europe from the USA mainly thanks to American pioneers such as The Boswell Sisters and The Andrews Sisters. In Europe, the first formations were formed during this period, such as the Austrian group Viennese Singing Sisters (active since the turn of the 20s and 30s). Among the first and most important female vocal groups singing in the style of close harmony in the Czechoslovak context, Sestry Allanov (also known as Allan's Sisters) and Three Little Girls belonged primarily. The Allan sisters were formed in Prague in 1940 and became the most popular girl trio of the forties. Their model was American formations. They originally performed under the name Tři pražská devčátka and appeared alongside greats such as Karel Vlach and R. A. Dvorský.
