About event
Alabaster Deplume, the artist name of Gus Fairbairn from Manchester, is a musician, composer and poet who is known for his special mix of jazz, folk and ghost Word. His music has a warm, soothing atmosphere, made up of simple, repeating melodies that often have something magical. Deplume is a descendant of the famous cultural breeding ground Total Refreshment Center in East London, where bands such as Kokoroko and The Comet are also their origins, and thus plays an important role in the bustling contemporary jazz scene of the city.
Alabaster Deplume announced 'Prologue to a Blade' in October - a series of creative statements that form the prelude to a larger project that will be published next year via the International Anthem label. The new EP contains two songs recorded in Palestine with local musicians, pianist Sami El Enani and Qanoun player Laith Albandak, and a third song inspired by the experience of life in solidarity with the Palestinian people. The EP is accompanied by the news of Deplume's debut collection Poetry and a tour through the US and Europe. This work forms the basis for his ever -evolving artistic journey, in which he explores the role of dignity in healing and the impact thereof on community, society and humanity.
His work is steeped in personal vulnerability and a strong political message, where he demands attention for individual feelings and collective sites. He wants his audience to understand what he is doing and why. On Saturday, May 24, Alabaster Deplume invites listeners to the Zonnehuis to think with him about the deeper meaning of his work.
