Albertina Modern-True Colors-Color Fotography 1839-1955

How did the color come into the photo? The TRUE COLORS - Color exhibition answers this question from 1849 to 1955 based on excellent works from the stocks of the photo collection of Albertina.
The desire for color in the photo dominated the world of photography from the start. True Colors traces the path of the development of color photography, from the first experimental techniques in the 19th century to a generally applicable analog color photography.

In the early days of photography, daguerreotypes and salt paper deductions were colored manually in order to to create colorful pictures. The monochrome pigment papers also contributed to the broad chromatic diversity of the photographs of the 19th century, which were very popular until the 1890s.

A first successful but an exclusive circle reserved in 1891 was presented. The brilliant recordings in the so -called interference color method are based on that physical principle of the standing waves, which also shows us colored reflections in soap bubbles. The unique items from the Albertina collection represent a unique focus.

A radical upheaval in image culture brought the autochrome process in 1907, which was also practical for amateurs and its inventors, the brothers Lumière, too great commercial success helped. However, it was used as a glass diapositively for projection. At the same time, around 1900 noble printing processes were developed, which with the help of color pigments produced multicolored image solutions. They fulfilled the art of art of the pictorialists and were common in large photo studios until the 1930s. At the same time, around 1900 to create deductions on paper with the help of various three -color processes, which were still based on a multi -stage manufacturing process. Shortly afterwards in Germany the Agfa company when they launched the first small image color diaprases. Successive improved products that prevailed after the Second World War revolutionized the use of color photography in the following decades. The triumph of the color in photography could no longer be stopped.
