About event
Drama Queer is presented by Vanderwogel
- after the performance you are welcome and welcome to a discussion with the author of the play Marc Cornwall The Devil's Wall and the creators of the production.
"Let my coffin be carried by six of our best and most beautiful boys. Before I have to go, leave me alone with them for an hour or all night. If I am among them, I know that I am alive even though my body is dead.
Heinz Rutha! Have you ever heard this name? No? It doesn't matter, in a hundred years no one will remember you either. At least until your story is discovered by the Wandervogel - a group of charming youngsters with an elderly leader who have rehearsed for you a tale of love, friendship and fascism.
The year is 1918 and the Sudeten Germans they find themselves in a state they don't want to be in. Who will protect the sacred homeland from the Czech aggressor? The difficult task is undertaken by Heinz Ruth, who sees the way to emancipation through the education of an elite group of young boys - the Männerbund, who are to be the ruling class of the future Sudeten German state.
The life of a Sudeten German nationalist Heinz Ruthy, an involuntary participant in the biggest homosexual scandal of the First Republic, is the starting point for a scenic composition combining elements of documentary and physical theater. An intimate war diary, authentic police protocols and historical-political speeches intertwine with the personal experiences of the performers and create a tension between the past and present meanings of the terms on which Rutha built his ideas about an ideal community.
What do sexuality, the body, the state, fascism, nature, beauty mean today?
The production is inspired by Mark Cornwall's book The Devil's Wall.
