Although skateboarding is often depicted as a counterpoint to mainstream society and capitalism, as skaters we often only reproduce the widespread bizarre and ritualistic behavior of "normal" citizens. Probably more than we'd like to admit.
The video essay is composed of images of skateboarding and additional footage taken on the streets of London during the year 2024.

Hsin Zhao is a Taiwanese skater and visual artist, attending FAMU in Prague at the time. In his multidisciplinary work, he discovers the intersections between skateboarding, Eastern philosophy, children's playfulness and mental health care.

While skateboarding often is articulated as a counterpoint to both capitalism and mainstream society, we perhaps demonstrate similarly bizarre and ritualistic behaviors more so than we care to believe. This video essay, collaged with skateboarding and B‑roll footage filmed in London, explores the similarities between skateboarders and the society their culture often seeks to resist.
