The visual artist and Westender Monika Heintze, born in Reinickendorf in 1939, grew up in war and post-war Berlin. At the age of 86, she processed these experiences in her first novel about the fictional child Hanna: “Everything has to be hidden.” Even as a five-year-old, Hanna knew that hiding was not just a game. If low-flying planes come to the Berlin area, it can be vital to survival. But Hanna is not only hiding from the bombs, but also from the mother's claim to power and control, who wants to make the imaginative child submissive with beatings, punishments and humiliation. In everyday life in the post-war period, the adolescent looks for places to escape and fights for her dream of becoming an artist.

Monika Heintze will read from this touching and unsentimental coming-of-age story in difficult times in the salon. With clarinet and piano accompanied by the musical improvisations Konstanthymes (konstanthyme.com), also an artist from the Westend. In the subsequent conversation we can talk about the creation of this late debut novel, about the importance of writing and the happiness of being able to be creative again and again.
