VLADIMIR: We can't.
ESTRAGON: Why?
VLADIMIR: We're waiting for Godot, aren't we.
ESTRAGON: True.
Beckett's drama seeks all knowledge of being in man alone. The crisis of identity is continued in the crisis of language. The confession the author makes about himself applies to Beckett's characters: "I have nothing to say, I have nothing to say it with, but I cannot speak." Language does not express personality and does not communicate anything certain. It serves simply as a means of communication, from which nothing but loneliness arises.
“First I was a prisoner of others. So I left them. After that I was a prisoner of myself. Which was worse. So I left myself too.”
Samuel Beckett
