“I want to help prevent the mistakes of the past from ever being repeated through the books that will be created here,” said Anna Seghers after her arrival in Berlin in 1947. She returned to Germany from exile in Mexico as a world-famous author and put her literary work at the service of the new society. As president of the GDR Writers' Association, she also took on political responsibility. Seghers' work was therefore repeatedly rejected in the Federal Republic, while she was a role model for many authors of the young GDR, including Christa Wolf and Heiner Müller, and her complex work offered a source of literary inspiration.
In Berlin-Adlershof, the writer Anna Seghers found a new home after many years in exile. Her apartment on today's Anna-Seghers-Straße, where she lived from 1955 until her death in 1983, has been preserved true to the original and can be viewed after registration. In addition to the furnishings and personal memorabilia that bear witness to an international life, Anna Seghers' library is particularly impressive. Around 10,000 volumes, including books by writer friends from many countries, are spread across the four rooms and the hallway.
