Anne Sauer will present her current novel “In the Life Next Door” on November 5th. Maria-Christina Piwowarski moderates the evening.
About the book:
One morning Toni doesn't wake up next to her long-time boyfriend in her small old apartment as usual because the floorboards creak and the neighbors are far too loud. No. To her amazement, she finds herself in a spacious apartment. Everything is bright, tidy, expensively furnished. And the view from the window? Strangely familiar. Antonia understands: she is back in the village of her childhood. Little by little she learns that she leads a tranquil life here, civilly organized, with a car in front of the door, mother-in-law next door and child on her lap. Child on your lap? Antonia can't help but be amazed. Is that her baby? And the father? Apparently her first great love - a man she could never completely forget.
Anne Sauer talks about how her own life could have turned out if she hadn't taken one crucial turn. “In the Life Next Door” reflects two life scenarios of a young woman, tells alternating two versions of a life and, with appropriate humor, feeling and lightness, takes a look at the horror of wanted and unwanted motherhood: the great happiness with a child, but also: living without a child.
Anne Sauer (*1989) lives as a freelance copywriter and presenter in Hamburg. She is part of literary juries and has been recommending current contemporary literature for many years, including: in the podcast ›MONATSLESE‹ or as @fuxbooks on Instagram. For her work, the German Book Trade Association awarded her the Young Excellence Award in 2022. Her highly acclaimed essay about Taylor Swift was published in 2024, with which she went straight onto the SPIEGEL bestseller list. ›In the Life Next Door‹ is her debut novel.
