About event
Together with the Amsterdam music platform Steppin 'Into Tomorrow we will look at this new documentary about the Jackie Shane, a trans woman at a time when that term barely existed. Moreover, she was black, which made her life in the American Deep South difficult. Yet she had a successful singing career that she gave up in 1971 for never cleared reason. This film is looking for an answer to the many questions that surround her.
In the 1960s, Shane refused a performance in the incredibly popular Ed Sullivan Show. Allegedly because she could only come if she dressed as a man. But that was unnatural. Shane was born as a man, she felt like a woman as a child and so she has manifested her entire life. Shane was not a singer, but a singer. And what kind of one. As a teenager, she already achieved successes and there seemed to be a big career waiting for her in Toronto, the city where she had moved from her hometown Nashville at the age of 21. She scored hits, but in 1971 she disappeared from the public stage to never return.
This documentary tells her story and tries to unravel the mystery with archive material, interviews and re-enactments. Shane, who died in 2019, will speak through telephone interviews, because she did not want to be filmed.
