About event
Âmbito Cultural do El Corte Inglés and the publisher Zigurate are pleased to invite you to the launch of the book Psiconautas – Drogas e a Formação da Mente Moderna, by Mike Jay, to be held on December 10th at 6:30 pm, in the Âmbito Room Cultural event at El Corte Inglés in Lisbon. The presentation will be given by João Taborda da Gama.
Synopsis
Before becoming a public health problem, drugs were a source of inspiration and scientific advances. The birth of psychology, the discovery of the unconscious and the emergence of modernism arose from processes of self-discovery provided by the use of substances that have since been illegalized.
Substances with properties that alter the mental state of those who take them have been available since always. The stimulants that arrived in Europe from other continents in the sixteenth century – coffee, tea, chocolate, tobacco – were valued mainly for their physiological virtues. The 19th century made psychotropics a central element for great advances in artistic and scientific culture.
It is this extraordinary story of discovery and self-discovery — from Freud to William James — that is told in this book. The author, Mike Jay, comes to the Cultural Âmbito of El Corte Inglés de Lisboa to talk about this taboo topic with João Taborda da Gama, university professor, lawyer and regular speaker on narcotics law and drug policy around the world.< br/>
