About event
Danish architect Johan Otto von Spreckelsen wins the competition for the monumental Grand Arch in the La Défense district of Paris. In realizing his pure geometric vision, however, he encounters political pressures, official compromises and his own doubts. A drama based on a true story about the clash of artistic integrity with the mechanisms of power. 🏗️👨🏼💼

Year 1983. An architectural competition is announced for a new landmark in Paris, which is to become a symbol of its modern La Défense district.
The competition is attended by the largest international architectural companies, and surprisingly the unknown architecture teacher Johan Otto von Spreckelsen wins with his project The Great Arch - La Grande Arche. Until now, this fifty-year-old Dane has built only four buildings: his home and three small chapels, devoting his life mainly to teaching and finding the balance between space, light and the human soul.
His Grand Arch is simple, geometrically pure, inspired by the idea of a gateway to heaven. The film follows how Otto copes with pressure from politicians, officials and the media, and with his own doubts as to whether it is possible to remain faithful to a spiritual vision in the midst of a world of compromises. The building, which was supposed to be a symbol of harmony, gradually turns into a mirror of his inner struggle.
💡 A minimalist bar (beer, lemonade and snacks) is available directly in the cinema. There are also toilets (at the café of the Ethnographic Museum) and blankets, in case you get cold in the evening.
