About event
ASTRONALIA 2024 – COSMIC SOUNDS AND VISIONS is an artistic and scientific project of the KOSMOS Artistic Foundation from Toruń. This is a series of events carried out in four towns in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship located on the Copernicus Trail: Brodnica, Chełmno, Grudziądz and Toruń. The project consists of concerts, lectures and workshops planned for the period from April to December 2024. The ASTRONALIA 2024 series of events is a continuation of the very well-received DE REVOLUTIONIBUS 2023 project (prepared in connection with the celebration of the 550th birthday of Nicolaus Copernicus), implemented by the Kosmos Artistic Foundation in 2023.
🌠 PROGRAM:
➡️ hours 10:00: sound and astronomy workshops (conducted by Rafał Iwański, Wojciech Zięba, Sebastian Soberski)
➡️ hrs. 12:00: film workshops - creating space films on a diascope (conducted by Anna Ruta Pilewicz, Mati Szorstki Matyasik)
SOUND AND ASTRONOMIC WORKSHOPS
The astronomical part of the workshops includes getting acquainted with numerous examples of authentic cosmic signals recorded by radio telescopes, including pulsars, i.e. neutron stars characterized by very high density and short, regular rotation periods. Sound examples will be accompanied by visual examples (maps of astronomical objects) to show how our perception of the Universe differs depending on the range of electromagnetic waves in which observations are made.
As part of the sound part of the workshops, interesting instruments used during recordings and VOICES OF THE COSMOS concerts: storm instruments ("spring tube"), rubbed metal objects and a set of small acoustic percussion instruments used to imitate the voices of the Cosmos. Together we will try to imitate the sound of such astronomical objects as pulsars, the Sun or the aurora borealis using acoustic percussion instruments. In the last part of the workshop, participants will create and decorate their own storm instruments, which they will later take home with them.
FILM WORKSHOPS
The workshops will cover two main space topics: space travel and science fiction stories about space exploration. Based on these materials, children and teenagers will create their own animated videos on the diascope.
Diascope - the so-called A foil projector is a device for presenting slides or text in the 1970s and 1980s. Nowadays, this type of analog projector can be used for various experiments with colored foils, transparent objects, liquids, and to create original animations. This use allows you to obtain extraordinary, dreamlike, imaginative images. These types of experiments stimulate the imagination, make people interested in the form, and encourage them to create. These workshops are also an opportunity to learn about analog optical devices from the 20th century and the opportunity to use them in unusual, creative ways. Artistic videos prepared by the participants and later permanently posted on the Internet on the YouTube channel of the KOSMOS Art Foundation. The films will also be later presented at the ceremonial summary of the project - on December 6 at the CSW in the Centrum Cinema.
