The Exhibition:
Stories about disappeared cultures have fascinated us for thousands of years; we are drawn to the idea of another world, an archaic civilization, a mythical city lost in the waves. The series 'Atlantis' paintings by Maryleen Schiltkamp testify to a cultural reflection, while also showing the destructive power of nature - a timeless tidal wave, sunken temples and amphitheatres in a mystical silence on the ocean floor... The utopian idea in Plato's story about Atlantis, has been further developed for this project into 'Atlantis & Other Utopias'. This is about the power of the human imagination and the desire for a better world, as we encounter it in literature or in legends throughout time. In Schiltkamp's series 'From the New World' based on Dvořák's Ninth Symphony, the emergence of a new world is depicted in stages of cubist abstraction, with the light from behind the picture plane shining through facets and fault lines. The two exhibitions 'Atlantis' and 'From the New World' are spread over the two flanks of the church. Schiltkamp's paintings, which formed the starting point for the 'Atlantis & Other Utopias' project, will be exhibited during the event in the Posthoornkerk; the exhibition will remain on view until Wednesday December 4, daily from 12:00 - 16:00. The artist is present at the exhibition.

The Exhibition
Legends about lost cultures have fascinated us for thousands of years; we are drawn to the idea of other worlds, an archaic civilization, a mythical city lost in the waves. The series of 'Atlantis' paintings by Maryleen Schiltkamp bear witness to a cultural view, while also showing the destructive power of nature - a timeless flood, sunken temples and amphitheaters in a mystical silence on the ocean floor... The utopian idea in Plato's story about Atlantis has been further developed for this project into 'Atlantis & Other Utopias'. This is about the power of the human imagination and the deeply rooted desire for a better world, as we encounter it in literature or in legends throughout the ages. In Schiltkamp's series 'From the New World' based on Dvořák's Ninth Symphony, the creation of a new world is depicted in stages of cubistic abstraction, with the light source as if from behind the canvas plane, shining through facets and fracture lines. The two exhibitions 'Atlantis' and 'From the New World' are divided over the two flanks of the Posthoornkerk. Schiltkamp's paintings, which formed the starting point for the project, will be exhibited in the Posthoornkerk during the event; the exhibition will remain on view until Wednesday 4 December, 12:00 - 16:00. The artist will be present at the exhibition.
