ATSUMORI, repeating spectrum — visibility mechanisms — interstitial topography — apotropaic dance

ATSUMORI is a dance piece for a quintet and a bright stage. This creation is based on the Japanese Noh Theater play Atsumori, written by Zeami Motokiyo in the 15th century, in which the ghost of a child warrior returns to the battlefield to avenge his own death. Catarina Miranda studied this play in Kyoto (2018) and was inspired to develop her own narrative, addressing the double affect of loss and the beginning of cycles, as well as the attraction to the unknown. The transgressed body wants to establish contact and assert itself at its maximum power. The quintet of dancers uses claps, whistles, sparks, whispers and vocal calls, while occupying an interstitial space through an apotropaic and rhythmic choreography, in a game of specters, shadows and metamorphoses, revealed by different levels of visibility. There are echoes and traces of the gestures of ancestral dances and contemporary social dances, here twisted and reconfigured, as if bodies and time were unfoldable, dismemberable, passable, embodied by Cacá Otto Reuss, Hugo Marmelada, Lewis Seivwright, Maria Antunes, Mélanie Ferreira. The scenic light, developed by Letícia Sckrycky and Joana Mário, plays an active role in this game of shadows, amplified by Lechuga Zafiro's musical composition, revealing the bodies that dissolve, that transform, that seek to emerge and coexist.
