About event
Imagine that you come to the cinema. Looking forward to the movie everyone is talking about. But instead of a great experience, you repeatedly run into the same barriers. You get confusing information, missing captions, no audio commentary, and technology that should be taken for granted is somehow not available. Although there is more and more talk about accessibility and inclusion, the reality of cinema distribution and screening still shows that the effort to present audiovisual work in such a way that it is also accessible to viewers with hearing or vision impairment is not yet changing into a common reality. Why is this so?
In the fifth year of the debate dedicated to accessibility and inclusion of people with visual and hearing impairments in the world of film and film screenings, we are following the growing initiatives aimed at supporting inclusion and accessibility in the film, cinema and media environment across Europe after a year. Together with experts in audiovisual accessibility, experts in filmmaking, managers of successful projects, relevant institutions and representatives of communities, we will think together about where the situation in Slovakia has moved in this direction.
We welcome that things are moving forward in our country too. However, it may be slower than we would like. Where have we noticed positive developments and where are we spinning in a vicious circle? What can change the system setup to make the cinema a truly open space? What does accessibility cost us, where do we lose and how much can it bring us? And who is responsible for it?
Come and listen to an open debate and join the discussion about how accessibility requirements are (not) met, where technical solutions are tied and what would have to happen so that everyone could really enjoy movies in Slovak cinemas.
Guests:
- Josélia Neves, international expert on design and creation of accessibility and inclusion, Portugal
- Joanna Stankiewicz, head of development, promotion and relationship building in the international project Cinema without Barriers, ZAMEK Cultural Center in Poznań, Poland
- Richard Kováčik, cinema program dramaturg, member of the Board of the Audiovisual Fund
- Renáta Majerčáková, representative of hearing-impaired viewers, member of the committee of the Slovak Association of Deaf Youth Clubs
- Peter Kozák, representative of visually-impaired viewers, actor and marketer
Emília Perez, accessibility expert, Department of Translatology FF UKF in Nitra, moderates.
The discussion will be simultaneously interpreted from/into Slovak sign language, as well as from Slovak to English.
The co-organizer of the panel discussion is the Department of Translation of the FF UKF in Nitra. The discussion is an output of the project VEGA 2/0092/23 Translation and translation in the history and present of the Slovak cultural space.
Entrance is free.
