About event
Hindustani Classical Music is a musical tradition from India that has roots in ancient Vedic musical traditions. This musical genre is predominantly associated with North India and is one of the two main Indian classical traditions (the other being Carnatic Classical Music, predominant in South India).
Characterized by a complex fusion of scales, rhythms, and emotional expressions, Hindustani Classical Music is performed on a vocal and instrumental level. The main components include improvisation (raga) and rhythmic expression (tala). Musicians often employ a variety of instruments, such as the sitar, sarod, tabla and tanpura, to create a rich and immersive sonic experience.
This tradition is passed down from generation to generation, often through a rigorous system of guru-shishya parampara, where knowledge is passed from master to disciple. Additionally, it is deeply rooted in emotional expression, exploring a wide range of feelings and moods, resulting in performances that are both intellectually rich and emotionally captivating.
Classes will be open to beginners (no or little experience) in music), of any age and of any genre.
Classes are given by Rupali Choudhury and Anurag Choudhury in Room 7, in the following times:
