About event

📸 In the second half of the 60s, due to the advent of a new generation and television, the production model of the big Hollywood studios was no longer sustainable, and the need for change hung in the air. The commercial failure of Cleopatra in 1963 became a symbol of the end of an era. The generation of creators that is getting the word out (its most prominent representatives were Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas, Brian De Palma, Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg) began to make films differently. The early films of these directors were quite radically defined against the Hollywood blockbuster production of the time. Many of them are still active today and in the last 30-40 years have fundamentally defined the form of American cinema.
🚕 The lecture will be followed by a screening of the film Taxi Driver (Martin Scorsese, 1976).
Scorsese's masterpiece, created in congenial collaboration with screenwriter Paul Schrader, does not offer a traditional story, but captures the process of the gradual disintegration of personality. Travis Bickle suffers from insomnia and his natural environment is the night streets of New York. His revolt is not directed against the ruling establishment, but against the lower social classes. In the 1970s, popular "revenge dramas", interwoven with Peckinpah's brutality, are dramaturgically constructed here according to Schrader's concept of transcendental film. Bickle is a character who becomes more and more alienated from his surroundings until the film reaches an unprecedentedly spectacular and cruel catharsis.
