About event
Following the premiere of the play Unknown Identity (Huwijat Gharíb) in Prague on the previous day of the festival, we will invite its author, Ghassán Naddáf, to a discussion about authorial and engaged theater in Palestine. How do the various functions of the theater interact with each other in the specific context of the occupation, to what extent is the writing, selection and performance of a particular play a personal artistic expression or an opportunity to strengthen a particular community, and to what extent is it a targeted political act of resistance? How do the creators deal with the multiple levels of injustice represented by both the occupation itself and the totalitarian practices of local government? Does the theatrical scene mix with reality as it does in the play Unknown Identity?
Ghassán Naddáf is a playwright, writer and educator working in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.
Ghassán Naddáf is a Palestinian playwright, storyteller and educator. Born in Amman, Jordan, he lives in Ramallah, where he teaches Arabic and drama and runs creative writing workshops. He published two collections of short stories, in 2015 Death of the Bread Thief (Mawt sáriq al-chubz) and in 2021 Attempts to survive (Muháwalat li-l-naja). After an engagement in the volunteer theater group Nabd ("Thump"), he founded the independent theater group Athar ("Footprint") in 2021 with Khalíl al-Batrán, which collectively processes current social issues in a theatrical form. Naddaf's plays such as Destination (Wujhat safar), Bridge (Jisr), Debris (ar-Rukám), Waiting (Qajd al-intizár), Identity Unknown (Huwíjat al-Gharíb) or Crime in Hideout (Jaríma fí al-ma' wá) have both audience and critical success and have received several awards.
Online debate in Arabic with interpretation into Czech.
