About event

Banská Bystrica and Bratislava – two cities, one story
Commented tour with a guide of Bratislava wanders

At first glance, different cities – one lying by the Danube, the other in the heart of the mountains – but their histories often intersected. Bratislava as the coronation city of the Hungarian kings and Banská Bystrica as the pearl of the mining towns had an irreplaceable place in the history of Hungary.

However, both cities were not spared difficult times - wars, uprisings or epidemics. And just as Hungary carried its destiny, so did these two cities.

On our tour we will reveal the differences in details, cathedrals, culture and fortifications, but above all we will discover what connected Banská Bystrica and Bratislava - and still connects them today.

The wealth of the mines financed royal courts, wars and constructions, while in Prešpork laws and agreements were concluded that determined the life of the whole kingdom.

Cities were also connected by the church – Bratislava as the seat of important chapters and monasteries, Banská Bystrica with its mighty city cathedral of St. František Xaverský and mining churches. The Reformation and re-Catholicization affected both cities in a similar way: churches changed, church orders entered education and monarchs supervised the faith of their subjects.

When history was breaking, Bratislava as a political metropolis and Banská Bystrica as a center of economic and military power were often on the same side. magnificent cathedrals
• urban privileges and freedom
• plague events and dark periods of epidemics
• the power of the judiciary

The story of these two cities shows that even if they are separated by dozens of kilometers, their common history is a tangle of the rule of monarchs, the influence of the church, the wealth of mines and the walls that protected them and still remind us that the history of Slovakia was written simultaneously on the Danube and under the Nízky Tatras.
