About event

This day is a holiday, even if they stand on their heads.

📍 New time and place:
• 16:30 – start of the March for Freedom and Democracy symbolically from the SNP Square, from the Black Obelisk.
• 17:00 – gathering in the Park under the SNP Monument.

We invite you to celebrate an exceptional holiday that is a celebration of the values of freedom and democracy. The day when we proudly remember the years 1939 and 1989 - Student Day and the Gentle Revolution and the events that have made Slovakia a free and democratic country for 36 years. We want to pay tribute to the personalities and murdered or martyred people who were marked by both totalitarianisms - fascist and communist.

🤍💙❤️
✌️ It will be a CELEBRATION OF GENTLE, the beginning of the annual Banská Bystrica Marches for freedom and democracy in a celebratory spirit. Make your joy known through clothes, messages on banners, but also singing, music - take musical instruments with you.

And don't forget the 🔑 KEYS 🔑 so you have something to tinker with.

✌️ We invite you to a memorial gathering in an era marked by efforts to rewrite history, to suppress democracy and freedom, and often common sense; by trying to threaten our belonging to Western values and the democratic world. At a time when, instead of celebrating this date because of its importance in our history, November 17 is a normal working day for tiling.

❗️Come celebrate it with us and express your determination to defend what we, but especially our ancestors, fought for 36 years ago.

Together we are a force! The truth will win!

The event was created in cooperation with the students of the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica.

Benijamín Łukovič (Department of Sculpture, Faculty of Fine Arts)
"Invisible fence": There is no limit as a limit (2025)
Semester student the work is a metaphor for invisible boundaries: psychological, moral or material, which we create for ourselves and which, although invisible to the eye, influence our thinking, actions and perception of freedom. The work will be presented at the end of the march, at the SNP monument, in the stairwell area.

Pavol Šeliga (Department of Intermedia and Digital Media, Faculty of Fine Arts)
"Key Memories" (2025)
The object of 3D printed keys in national colors refers to the year of the Gentle Revolution. The date is marked on one side, and the abbreviation NIOT (Not In Our Town) is on the other - the name of the civic platform "Not in our town", the main organizer of the commemorative event for the 36th anniversary of the Day of Freedom and Studentship. Visitors can pin the keys as a next generation link. The object can also be read as a gesture of relay responsibility for democratic values.

Romana Babicová (Department of Acting, Faculty of Dramatic Arts)
"Prayer for Martha" - interpretation
The acting student, who already worked with the song as a symbol in her previous work, this time sings it unplugged during the memorial gathering. He thus becomes the voice of a generation that re-formulates the language of freedom and the legacy of November 1989.
