Inaugural Concert Barcelona Jazz Festival
With Ella Fitzgerald (along with Duke Ellington) the previous history of our festival began, when both played in a double program (she with the Jimmy Jones trio; he leading his orchestra) on January 25, 1966 at the Palau de la Música Catalana. The success was thunderous, and the promoter, Joan Roselló (then owner of the Jamboree), decided to create the Barcelona Jazz Festival that same autumn.
To celebrate the 60 years of that historic concert, we have commissioned the Barcelona Jazz Orchestra (BJO) to perform a concert around Fitzgerald, whom Dani Alonso, director of the BJO, considers "one of the most important singers in history, and within jazz, the most famous and the one who had the longest career, from her beginnings with Chick Webb at the Savoy to her last concert before her retirement at Carnegie Hall in 1991. Because, let's face it, few voices sing more truly than the one who was considered the first lady of jazz. The BJO will also perform this tribute with a singer who is part of New Orleans musical royalty: Tricia Boutté. "With her, a singer with a lot of personality," explains Alonso, "we will take a walk through some of the most emotional and energetic albums that Ella Fitzgerald recorded, along with great orchestras such as Chick Webb, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Nelson Riddle." And what will be on the menu? «You will be able to listen – continues the director of the BJO – great classics such as, among others, A-Tisket, A-Tasket and On The Sunny Side of the Street, as well as repertoire from the songbook of composers such as George Gershwin and Irving Berlin, in a renewed and original version.»
Ella Fitzgerald, yes, returns to the Palau.
