BECOMING: Queering your Friday night with fluid theatre, dialogue and party
Welcome to BECOMING Diaspora: the second edition of the series in Podium Mozaïek! For many queer people, migration is not a choice, but a necessity - and an act of radical self-preservation and resistance. For this edition, program maker Nilay Ceber joins forces with writer, activist and trans refugee Alejandra Ortiz. They give space to voices from diverse diasporas: with rituals, music, dance and performances that break boundaries and celebrate bodies as political territory.
Alejandra Ortiz
Partner for this edition is Alejandra Ortiz (She/Her), a trans refugee from Mexico. In the Netherlands, she is committed to improving the lives of transgender people, especially transgender people of color – with or without papers. She has founded a language house, organized symposia and contributed to research reports, all to improve the position of trans refugees. She received the Winq Community Award 2023 for her work. Alejandra also recently published the book 'The truth will set me free' about her wanderings through the Dutch asylum system and other stories about migration and displacement, with room for lightheartedness and humor. Language: BECOMING is always a mix of English (80%) and Dutch (20%), including some that are non-lingual. The presentation is done in simple English. Some acts or interviews are in Dutch. If you don't speak Dutch, it's definitely worth coming, because you can follow most of it!
