About event
The publisher Koloman Kertész Bagala regularly invites authors whose works have been published by his publishing house to literary discussions. The writer Marek Vadas will arrive with him for the next discussion. The author leads two parallel lives - one in Slovakia, where he was born, and the other in Africa, where he goes not only to draw inspiration for his works, but also to act as an adviser to the king of the small Cameroonian kingdom of Niejey.
His latest book The Valley takes place in an African autocratic country, where the government army terrorizes part of the civilian population. However, distance does not play a role here, because the situation is surprisingly similar to ours — not only because of the proximity of the war, but also because of the state's efforts to limit civil liberties. The interconnected stories told to a taxi driver in a city on the edge of conflict are based on real facts, and they are also the most Slovak book that Marek Vadas has written so far.
Marek Vadas (*1971) published the books Liečiteľ, Čierne na čiernom and Zlá četra, which take place in an African setting. In them, his handwriting is influenced by the indigenous folk style of storytelling, in which fact and fantasy, magic and dark humor, absurdity and dark existential tones are mixed. In the next book, Six Strangers, he returned to Slovakia — its theme is the forgotten anti-Roma pogrom, the subsequent silence of society, unacknowledged guilt, and individual and social memory.
He made his debut in 1994, wrote eight books for adults, three for children's readers, and is the laureate of the Anasoft Litera Award, the most prestigious Slovak award for prose work. His works have been translated into fifteen languages.
