About event
On December 9, Johan van Merriënboer and Iris Pronk will be guests during Biografie op de bühne, the monthly talk show of BiografiePortal.
Ruud Lubbers: a bit different. That is the title that Johan van Merriënboer and Lennart Steenbergen gave to the biography of – in their eyes – no-nonsense Prime Minister Ruud Lubbers. A man who performed excellently in the Netherlands during elections and gave a new twist to the premiership, but never received the international recognition/position he hoped for. Van Merriënboer and Steenbergen base their findings on conversations with former employees and colleagues. , family, friends and Lubbers himself and consulted public and personal archives at home and abroad, including those of Thatcher, Reagan and Bush and Lubbers' personal file.
In her last months, Renate Dorrestein tore up enormous amounts of paper. 'Personal correspondence, folders full of yellowed emotions, I showed no mercy. I said to my assistant Andrea: “Imagine that after your death, when you can no longer defend yourself, you have a biographer chasing you.”' Iris Pronk has been working on the biography for quite some time, which should have been published on May 4. last year, the sixth anniversary of Dorrestein's death. What does it mean for a biographer to know that your subject knowingly destroyed material?
