** Despite the serious humanitarian and economic consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, the world remains "[dangerous unprepared] (https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-parmaceuticals/all-countries-dangerously-unprepared-future-pandemics-says-ifrc-2023-01-30/) " At the same time, the speed of zoonotic pathogens and with rapid progress in synthetic biology increases there is a possibility of much more deadly pandemies due to unintentional or deliberate release of laboratory pathogens. **
Understanding and preparing for pandemic in the context of technological progress of 21st century. Century is essential for global safety. In our eight -week seminar we focus on technical and political efforts to prevent, detect and respond to catastrophic pandemics.
** For whom is the seminar intended? **
A seminar especially suitable for you if:
* You have technical education (especially in the field of biological sciences, engineering, materials or data sciences) and want to learn how you can use your skills to alleviate pandemic risks.
* You have experience with policy and would like to use your skills to reduce the risk of pandemies.
* You are at the beginning of your career or you are a student who is interested in exploring a future career in technical or political areas to reduce the risk of pandemics.
If none of this relates to you, consider the application form. There are many skills, experiences and approaches that are not described above, but can be beneficial to reduce risk.
** 💡 What do you take away? **
* You will get to know the key ideas of pandemic readiness thanks to a professionally designed teaching plan.
* A professional facilitator will help you orientate yourself in the content and social aspects of the field, such as what organizations exist or which researchers do what work.
* You become part of a community of people who think about the same things. We organize regular events, monitor opportunities in the field and associate people with the same interest.
** We will discuss in each week: **
* Intro into biological safety and source of pandemic risks
* Malevolent actors and progress in biotechnology
* Framework for evaluation of measures in the field of biological safety
* Preventive measures against the outbreak of pandemic
* Pandemic detection
* Reaction to pandemic
* Exercise: Pandemia simulation
* How to contribute to the relief of the risk

** 🎓 How does the seminar go? **
You will read texts from different sources in English every week. Preparation takes about 3 hours a week.
You will be divided into smaller groups of 3 to 6 people who will meet once a week for an hour to an hour and a half long discussion, where you will discuss the read texts for the week. The discussion itself takes place in Czech.
Discussions will help you better understand and organize your thoughts and also get to know interesting people who are interested in pandemic risks. The discussion will be moderated by an experienced facilitator that helps to care for its quality and ensures a safe and stimulating environment.
** ⏳ When? The meeting will be 8 - one week one.
** 🗺️ Where? ** The meeting will take place in person in Prague or Brno, or online. (Personal meetings may be in another city if a group of interested parties meet here.)
