"In ancient times, this was where the dye ponds were. This is where the bleachers watered their huge cloths. The steam that rose from the wet fabrics enveloped the place in a constant fog." (Hospital of the Spirits, intro) in the fumes between the years we poke around in the top loader, fiddle with the factory settings or fray in the lint filter. Everything is always moving too fast. What is a gray haze, where does the soft soap come in and what is the degree of hardness again? Detergent substances, mixtures of surface-active substances, dosing aids or the entire program? Who is supposed to decide everything again now? the drum rattles at 180 revolutions. The lye spills out of the crossfader. the drain gurgles at a low frequency. then everything starts to rattle. is the doll detergent popping in now? Overstimulating or powdering with staple bags, we swamp through sound and foam, rolling in moisture between washboard technology or house laundry, surfactant tent or rinse chamber, colored clothes dryer or gentle cycle. Thirty soaking wet hours of temperature fall in the spin cycle, and then to the boiling point landing either softened or extra dry, bleached or bull-eyed, salty in spots or clean deep into the pores. Just never read the laundry list: "60 degrees, 90 degrees, 100 degrees, powder in. Tap turned on - it can all be that simple." (dachshund blood, going to the wash)
