He has released several author albums, the most important of which are Milk Cow Blues (1988), Street Corner Cowboys (1995) and Hitchhiking With the Blues (2000). They all carry his typical features - a masterful guitar game, a deep knowledge of the genre and an authentic approach to the musical tradition. His books such as Escaping The Delta: Robert Johnson and the Invention of the Blues or How the Beatles Destroyed Rock 'N' Roll: An alternative History of American Popular Music offer an original view of popular music history. His work was awarded a number of professional recognitions, including the Grammy Award for the accompanying text on the CD Box set The Arhoolie Foundation.
